About Transfer Boxs

The Toyota transfer box, as the name suggests, transfers power to the front prop shaft. This prop shaft is attached to the rear prop shaft with a differential connecting the two. The power that’s generated in the front prop shaft is transferred through the differential to the rear prop shaft.

The Toyota transfer box is part of the drivetrain on 4 x 4 and multi-axle vehicles and allows the driver to change between 4 x 4 and 2 x 2 wheel drive. It receives power from the transmission and uses either gears, hydraulics or in the case of some multi-axle vehicles, chain drive.

The Toyota transfer box is designed for both on-road and off-road driving. The Toyota transfer box can leak oil, which can be noticed either on the Toyota transfer box or from the handbrake drum, depending on the position of the leaking seal. This leaking of oil will cause a loss of power steering. Other signs of a failing transfer box include a whining noise when you accelerate and a tapping noise as you decelerate. These issues can be accompanied with, or separate to a loss of braking ability and a loss of gears.

Toyota trivia

  • That founder's name was Toyoda, but the name of the company was changed to Toyota because it took one less stroke to write in Japanese. Eight is a lucky number in Japan, and Toyota takes eight strokes to write, and so Toyota it is!
  • The first car company to produce over 10 million cars in a single year (which they did in 2013), Toyota also boasts the record-breaking sales of one Corolla sold every 37 seconds (every 27 seconds in 2013). That made the Corolla the best selling car of all time!
  • As well as the best selling car of all time, Toyota is also responsible for the longest-running production on a car model ever. The Toyota model Land Cruiser started production in 1951, and as of 2019 has sold over 10 million units!
  • The Toyota company got its start making automated looms in 1033. Founder Sakichi Toyoda even invented the automated loom and then sold them off to try and get into the car industry. There is still an arm of Toyota that is still in the textile industry!
  • Toyota has thousands and thousands of patents, and in 2019 it gave away an incredible 23,740 patents that had been awarded over more than 20 years. Those patents were all focused on electric vehicle technology.
