History of Vauxhall Agila

The Vauxhall Agila is a versatile city car produced under the German marque Opel, but sold under the Vauxhall name in the UK from 2000 to 2015. Its name comes from the Latin Agilis, meaning ''agile''. The Agila lived through two generations, with both based around rebadged Suzuki models - the Suzuki Wagon R+ for the first gen and the Suzuki Splash for the second gen. The Mk1 Agila was classified as a city car due to its small overall size, while the Mk2 was classed as a mini MPV. It was replaced for the UK market in 2015 by the Vauxhall Viva. The Vauxhall Agila was a surprisingly practical small car, with a range of features and a fun little personality. What Car? describes the Agila as spacious with a well laid out cabin and a good drive quality, although felt that some rivals offered higher standards and better equipment for a similar price.

First Generation Vauxhall Agila (2000 - 2007)

The Agila was first unveiled in 2000 under the Vauxhall marque for the UK market. Elsewhere, it was known as the Opel Agila. This first gen model was a rebadged version of the Japanese Suzuki Wagon R+. It utilised Opel-sourced engines, including a 1.0 L and 1.2 L, which were designed to be both powerful and refined within the Agila''s small frame. The 1.0 engine was a three-cylinder offering 973cc, while the 1.2 was a four-cylinder boasting 1248cc.

The Agila was built at Opel''s factory in Poland, while the Suzuki Wagon R+ it was based on was built at the Magyar Suzuki plant in Hungary.

Second Generation Vauxhall Agila (2007 - 2015)

2007 saw the introduction of the second generation Agila, which was first unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was slightly larger than its predecessor, moving it from the city car category to the mini MPV class.

The Mk2 Agila was offered with a three-cylinder 1.0 L or a four-cylinder 1.2 L petrol engine, or a four-cylinder 1.3 L diesel unit with common rail technology. All of the Agila''s engines contain ''Ecotec'' technology. The Agila was available in two different trim levels: Base/Essentia and Edition/Enjoy.

Production of the Agila for European markets took place at the Magyar Suzuki plant in Hungary, alongside the Suzuki Splash from which it was based. Production of the Agila stopped when it was replaced by the Vauxhall Viva in 2015, also known as the Opel Karl outside the UK.
