About Steering Rack
One of the most popular steering systems in modern motor vehicles is the rack and pinion system. The Astra Vauxhallsteering rack forms one part of the mechanics of this system. One of the reasons for the system’s popularity is undoubtedly its simplicity. In a typical non-powered steering system a set of rack and pinion gears is enclosed in a metal tube. Each end of the rack protrudes from the ends of the tube. Each end of the Astra Vauxhallsteering rack is connected to a rod, known as a tie rod. The pinion is connected to the steering shaft and when the steering wheel is turned it causes the pinion gear to spin, which moves the Astra Vauxhallsteering rack transversely. The tie rods on either side of the rack connect to spindles on the car wheels. The transverse movement of the rack thereby causes the wheels to turn right and left according to the direction in which the vehicle is being steered.
In a power steering system the design of the Astra Vauxhallsteering rack has one or two variations. A section of the rack is connected to a cylinder with a piston in the centre, which has a fluid port on either side. Hydraulic fluid is provided to either side of the piston, which causes the Astra Vauxhallsteering rack to move, producing the power assisted steering.
Vauxhall Astra trivia
- The Astra sold exceptionally well in the UK, and it quickly became the second most popular small family car in the country (after the Ford Escort). The Mark 2 Astra sold even more and came very close to the Escort in terms of sales.
- The white version of the Vauxhall Astra 1800 GTE was the first car in the UK to be colour-coded. The body trim matched the white base colour and included the skirts and the wheel arch extensions. Ford was so happy with the look that the silver, black, and red models also started to include colour-coding.
- In 30 years of production, there had been 2.5 million Astras sold in the UK, which means that it ranks fourth in the most popular cars in Britain.
- In 1999, the Astra MK4 was awarded four stars in the Euro NCAP tests and is still considered one of the safest cars in the country.
- The Astra GTE Quicksilver was a design exercise intended to coincide with the silver anniversary of the Ellesmere Port Factory in 1987.
