Vauxhall Cavalier Common Problems and Solutions
Car stalling problem
Problem:
If the car starts OK, but it stalls when driving then it is most likely a faulty idle speed control valve. This is a common fault on the Vauxhall Cavalier.
Solution:
This can be fixed by cleaning the idle speed control valve with some carb cleaner and refitting. If the problem still persists then you will have to have a new idle speed control valve fitted.

Faulty ECU (Engine Management)
Problem:
If you have noticed the Engine management warning light coming on and staying on, on the dashboard then it is most likely an ECU problem.
Solution:
Have a diagnostic check run on your engine to determine the exact fault. If it is the ECU, you will need to replace this part to resolve the issue.

Loss of Braking efficiency
Problem:
On some Cavalier's it has been known for the braking not to work to it's full capacity. This is due to movement in the engine causing a wiring harness to chafe against the steel brake pipe.
Solution:
This problem was subject to a recall by Vauxhall.

Car a bit sluggish on take off
Problem:
If you have noticed that your car is a bit sluggish on take off then you could have a problem with the distributor cap and rotor arm.
Solution:
If these parts are at fault, change them by fitting new parts and this should resolve the issue.

Rattling noise coming from engine
Problem:
When your engine is idling and you hear a rattling noise, it is common for a Vauxhall Cavalier to have a crack in the exhaust manifold. This crack causes the rattling noise, which goes away once the engine has warmed up.
Solution:
Buying a replacement manifold can be expensive, but you can save money on a quality second hand replacement part using our parts finder.

Oil warning light problem
Problem:
If the oil warning light on your dashboard has started to show, and you have checked the oil levels on your car and they are OK, this is most likely a problem with the oil pressure sensor.
Solution:
Locate the sensor and clean the connectors to resolve this problem. If it still doesn't work you will have to buy and fit a new sensor.
