History of Vauxhall Vectra

First introduced to the UK market in 1995, the Vauxhall Vectra was a large family car originally engineered and produced in conjunction with German automaker Opel. Originally, the Vectra was sold under the Opel marque from 1988, before branching out to other markets later on in its life. In the UK the Vectra replaced the Vauxhall Cavalier, with which it shared similar production traits. Although known for its spacious interior and comfortable driving quality the Vectra fought to be heard in a competitive market, which also included the infamous Ford Mondeo, and was known to have some reliability issues. The Vauxhall Vectra earned a reputation for its comfortable driving capabilities and easy-going, everyday driving style, leading it to become popular for company cars and those covering long distances. However, according to Warranty Direct''s reliability index the Vectra is ranked below average when it comes to overall reliability, which isnt very good news for owners. Thankfully, Breakeryard.com is on hand to help.

Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 2002)

1995 saw the launch of the Vectra in the UK, under the Vauxhall brand name. Before this, the Vectra was sold under the Opel marque in other European markets from its inception in 1988, with those models known as the Vectra A. The Vectra B, the first model to have the Vauxhall name, premiered at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and saw the introduction of an estate variant for the first time.

The Vauxhall Vectra replaced the existing Cavalier model as a large family car in the Vauxhall line up. This Vauxhall badged Vectra was the last Vauxhall model produced at the company''s Luton plant before its closure was announced in December 2000. The plant fully closed in 2002.

This second gen line up saw engines starting from 1.6 litres, although all 8-valve engines were replaced with 16-valve power plants over time. Diesel engines were sourced from Isuzu, as with previous models. These included a 1.7 litre and a 2.0 litre Ecotec. A new 2.2 litre petrol engine was introduced in 2001, which was carried over to the newer Vectra C when it launched.

The Vectra was updated in 1999 to include a slightly modified body, with single piece headlights and body-coloured bumpers, as well as improved handling and updated equipment.

Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2009)

The Vectra C vehicle was officially launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2002, with the estate version premiering later at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. This newer estate variant has a longer wheelbase than previous hatchback and saloon versions.

Due to the increased weight that the new model carried, the engine line up was greatly updated. Base models featured the Family 1 Ecotec 1.8 litre engine, while the main petrol option for the Vectra C was the Ecotec 2.2 litre chain driven unit. A top of the range 3.2 litre 54-degree V6 was also introduced. Once again diesel power sources came courtesy of Isuzu, including a 3.0 litre DMAX V6.

The Vectra C did not achieve the same level of commercial success as its predecessor when it came to the UK market. The Vectra C never came higher than tenth in the UK''s car sales charts, although in its own category it remained a steady second behind the Ford Mondeo. In 2007, the Vectra outsold the Mondeo for the first time since 1999, and was named Estate Car of the Year at the What Car? Magazine Awards in the same year.
