History of Vauxhall Zafira

The Zafira, marketed in the UK as the Vauxhall Zafira, is a compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) available since January 1999. The Zafira is produced by German car manufacturer Opel, and has lived through three generations including the most recent Zafira Tourer, which launched in 2011. In the same year the Zafira Tourer achieved a five star safety rating from EuroNCAP, followed by a number of awards in the following years including Best Estate Car at the German Car of the Year Awards. As a popular vehicle for Opel/Vauxhall, the Zafira has stood the test of time and remained popular throughout its lengthy lifespan. The car is best known for its great engine range across its generations, with the newer Zafira Tourer selling itself as a combination of dramatic looks with the versatility of a seven-seat people carrier, giving drivers the best of both worlds.

Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005)

The first generation of the Vauxhall Zafira was revealed in concept form at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1997, before going into production in 1999. It is often referred to as Zafira A, as is customary for many Opel/Vauxhall models. Developed with the help of Porsche, the Zafira originally had seven seats arranged in three rows, where the back row could be folded into the floor to create more space. This helped prevent the need for seats to be physically removed from the car. This flexible seating system was named Flex 7.

In 2001, at the Geneva Motor Show, the turbocharged Zafira OPC went on show, before going on sale in October 2001. It''s powerful 192 PS (141 kW) made it the fastest people carrier on sale in Europe. It was available with a five-speed manual transmission, allowing for 0-100 km/h (62 mph) to be reached in 8.2 seconds with a top speed of 137 mph.

Vauxhall Zafira B (2005 - 2014)

The Zafira B, the second generation model Zafira, was launched in Europe in 2004, with sales starting in 2005. Classed as a compact MPV, the Zafira B was assembled in Bochum, Germany and Gliwice, Poland. The Zafira B''s engine lineup is similar to the previous Astra/Zafira generation, replacing the old 2.0 and 2.2 turbodiesel I4 engines with 1.9l common-rail turbodiesels developed by Fiat. The engine lineup also included 1.6l, 1.8l, 2.0l and 2.2l petrol engines.

The Zafira B was praised for its handling, particularly for a larger MPV vehicle. Autocar celebrated the fact that this generation of Zafira has stood the test of time, including the arrival of an all new model, the Zafira Tourer, cementing its popularity and providing a testament to its great design. The VW Touran was stiff competition for this vehicle.

Vauxhall Zafira Tourer C (2011 - Present)

The third generation Zafira, known as the Zafira Tourer C, was first seen in concept form at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show as the ''Zafira Tourer Concept''. It is based on the Opel Astra J. When the Zafira Tourer C went on sale, the Zafira B remained on the market in a facelifted form, with the aim to act as a smaller and cheaper version for budget buyers. The Zafira Tourer C is bigger in size than its predecessors, designed to act as a rival to the popular Ford S-Max.

In December 2011 a natural gas version of the Zafira Tourer was announced. As a dual-fuel vehicle its CNG tank will drive the car over 500 km, while a 14 litre petrol tank provides additional range when there is no CNG filling station nearby. All other engines, including a 1.4l petrol and 2l diesel, have a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, aside from the 1.8l petrol which has a five-speed manual gearbox as standard. In 2014 Opel introduced its new generation of engines, starting with 2.0 CDTI engine with 170 PS and 400 Nm. This is part of a strategy in which Opel aims to introduce 17 new engines before 2018.

The Zafira Tourer scored an excellent 5-star rating in the EuroNCAP safety tests. In 2012 the Zafira Tourer was awarded Best Estate Car at the German Car of the Year awards.
