Volkswagen Caravelle Common Problems and Solutions

ABS and ESP Warning Lights (1.9-Ltr and 2-Ltr Models)

Problem:

The ABS and ESP warning lights suddenly illuminate when you're driving.

Models affected:

Solution:

The sight of these two warning lights can cause panic, but although this caused a recall by VW, it's really nothing more than dirty wheel bearings. You may be able to get away with removing them and giving them a good clean before applying lubrication and re-installing them. If they have become cracked or worn, then have replacements delivered by us and install the new ones.

Power Loss (Petrol Models)

Problem:

When you get to about 3000rpms, you experience a sudden power loss.

Models affected:

Solution:

This is a problem with your variable inlet manifold switchover valve actuator or your vacuum control solenoid. Try ordering the solenoid first as this is extremely low-cost from BreakerYard, and installation is very straightforward. If the solenoid replacement doesn't fix the problem, then you'll need to replace the actuator, which is still straightforward but a lot more fiddly.

Fuel Smell (2.5-Ltr Diesels)

Problem:

You can smell fuel from inside the car.

Models affected:

Solution:

It's likely that you have a loose injector union nut, and you'll simply have to retighten it to the correct torque. However, if your Caravelle is also stalling at running temperature then you have worn injector O-rings too. Have a look at the parts for the Caravelle in our store and order new O-rings.

Limp Home Mode Activated (2.0-Ltr Diesels)

Problem:

Your Caravelle has suddenly switched into limp home mode. It may begin to start poorly, and the performance could become juddery.

Models affected:

Solution:

This could be nothing more than a faulty absolute manifold pressure sensor, which is a very easy part to find on our parts list and very simple to install. If the juddering and poor starts are frequent, then it's more likely to be a worn EGR valve. These are also simple to replace, and you can even have the sensor delivered.

Screeching Noise

Problem:

You can hear a screeching noise when you start the engine.

Models affected:

Solution:

Your throttle valve has seized and will need to be replaced with a non-worn one. Have your replacement delivered by BreakerYard and install the new one.

Fluctuating Engine Speed (All 1.9 Diesel Models)

Problem:

When you're applying low revs, the engine speed is fluctuating.

Models affected:

Solution:

This is a sign that your camshaft is excessively worn or that you have damaged hydraulic tappets on cylinder number four. Check both. If it's the camshaft, then you can order a replacement from our parts list and have the new one delivered. Hydraulic tappets are a hard part to install yourself, but it's much more wallet-friendly to do yourself than to send to a mechanic.

Cruise Control Malfunction

Problem:

The cruise control is not working as it should.

Models affected:

Solution:

This is a very common problem with the Caravelle, but it's an easy fix. Check the connections to the cruise control unit and reattach any loose connections.

Left rear tyre wear

Problem:

It is common on these vehicles to have an unusual amount of wear on the left rear tyre.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to replace the tyre if the tread is under 1.6mm. Watch the video below to see how to change a tyre:

2

Rear suspension springs snapping

Problem:

If you have noticed that there is a noise coming from the rear, especially when driving over rough surfaces or bumps, then you most likely have a broken rear suspension spring.

Models affected:

Solution:

Have a look under the vehicle at the rear to see if there is a jagged edge sticking out. If there is then you have a broken spring which will need replacing.

Difficulty level

4

Gear changing problems

Problem:

If you have noticed that there is a bit of a struggle when changing into some of the gears, this is pretty common on the Volkswagen Caravelle. This problem is caused by the gear linkage. You may have to get the linkage adjusted, or in some cases the linkage bolts could become loose.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will have to get the affected gear linkage adjusted to fix this problem or if it is a loose bolt, this will need tightened to fix your problem.

Lack of power

Problem:

If you notice that your Caravelle is struggling for power, particularly going up hill, you most likely have a problem with the air mass meter.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to replace the air mass meter to solve this problem. Buying a replacement air mass meter can be costly but you can save money on a quality second hand part with us.

Difficulty level

3

Side sliding door failure

Problem:

It is known on these vehicles for the side sliding door to fail, and the rear of the door to catch on the body. This failure is caused by the door runners.

Models affected:

Solution:

You can adjust the runners to fix this problem, but if this doesn't work, you will have to replace the door runners.

Difficulty level

3

Starting problem

Problem:

It is common on these vehicles to have problems when starting the vehicle and hearing a knocking noise coming from the engine. This is caused by a cracked damper at the end of the crankshaft.

Models affected:

Solution:

To stop this knocking noise, you will need to replace the damper.

Difficulty level

3

Handbrake Disengaging

Problem:

The handbrake is disengaging by itself.

Models affected:

Solution:

This is one of the more serious recalls for the Caravelle and is going to mean replacing the whole handbrake lever, which has a faulty push button. Type your registration number into our search bar on the homepage, and you'll be able to order a new lever easily.

Noisy Front Suspension

Problem:

The front suspension is making a lot of noise when you're driving.

Models affected:

Solution:

This caused a technical service bulletin from VW and is being caused by faulty axial bearings. You'll find new bearings on our parts list for the Caravelle, and they are fairly easy to fit into place.
