First Generation Volkswagen Polo (1975 - 1981)

The first ever VW Polo was actually a rebadged Audi 50. The typ 86 was produced worldwide, with half a million rolling off the production lines by 1979. The MkI Volkswagen Polo came with three different engines, an 895 cc straight-4 petrol (only available in the hatchback), a 1093 cc straight-4 petrol and a 1,272 cc straight-4 petrol (Polo GT). The power output depended on the compression and varied according to the country of sale. A facelift in 1979 (known as the Mark IF) brought new plastic bumpers, a revised front grille and a new look dashboard.

Second Generation Volkswagen Polo (1981 - 1995)

The typ 86C was introduced in October 1981. Within two years, the millionth Polo was produced and by 1986 two million had rolled off the production line. The Mark II VW Polo was used by Volkswagen as a guinea pig for developing future innovations, such as adding a 40mm G-Lader supercharger.

The MkII Volkswagen Polo was popular in the UK and competed with other superminis such as the Peugeot 205, Fiat Uno and Nissan Micra. It was known for reliability and build quality, which explains why you can still find specimens of this age on the road. The engines available on the Mk2 VW Polo were a 1,043 cc straight-4 petrol, a 1,272 cc straight-4 petrol with a Pierburg 2E3 carburettor producing 55 hp, a 1,272 cc straight-4 petrol with multi-point fuel injection producing 74 hp and a 1,272 cc straight-4 supercharged petrol with 113 PS. No diesel engines were available for the British market.

A facelift in 1990 marked the beginning of the Polo''s transformation into the car we know today. The MK IIF featured square headlights, bigger reshaped tail lights, larger bumpers and a new dashboard and door trim inside. There were also changes to the chassis, suspension and brakes, and all engines came with a catalytic converter as standard to comply with new European rules. Soon after the launch of the facelifted model the supercharged G40 was released, the first of the hot hatch Polos to come from the German manufacturer.

Third Generation Volkswagen Polo (1995 - 2003)

The mid-1990s saw the launch of the typ 6N, or mark III. This was a completely new model with a brand new chassis. It was available as a three or five door hatchback as well as saloon and estate versions, although these were essentially rebadged SEAT Cordobas. The Mk3 Volkswagen Polo was available with a range of engines ranging in power outputs from 45 PS to 100 PS.

In 1999 a facelift model appeared, the 6N2. This version of the Volkswagen Polo featured an updated interior that was based on the Lupo, with new headlights and bumpers, twin airbags as standard and a fully galvanised and stiffened body shell.

The third generation Volkswagen Polo sold very well in the UK. It won multiple awards including 1995 What Car? Car of the Year and 1998 Top Gear Magazine "Top Cars" Best Supermini.

Fourth Generation Volkswagen Polo (2003 - 2008)

The new 9N Volkswagen Polo was another all new model, this time with quad round headlights and more modern styling. A range of engines were available on the mark IV Polo including 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrol engines and 1.4 and 1.9-litre diesels.

The fourth generation Volkswagen Polo didn''t sell as well in the UK as the previous iterations. It fared poorly in several high profile satisfactions surveys. Between 2003 and 2008 there was also a crossover in the form of the Polo Dune, which became the CrossPolo with the 2006 facelift. The facelift typ 9N3 Polo was designed by Walter de Silva and featured the one piece headlights and tail lights from the Passat.

VW also debuted their BlueMotion eco technology with the Polo. They launched a 1.4-litre TDI Polo with longer gear ratios, aerodynamic changes and lightweight alloys with low rolling resistance tyres. The BlueMotion Polo produced less than 100g/km of CO2 and had a stated fuel economy of 74.3 mpg combined.

Fifth Generation Volkswagen Polo (2008 - Present)

The most recent generation of Polo has been going since late 2008. It was actually revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009 and has been extremely well received, winning European Car of the Year 2010, a first for the Volkswagen Polo, and World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show in the same year. The Polo 6R is bigger than the mark IV and was awarded a five-star Euro NCAP crash impact rating. The fifth gen VW Polo is available with a range of engines ranging from a 70 PS 1.2l to a 180 PS 1.4l turbocharged petrol and three diesel options ranging from 75 to 105 PS.

The 2014 facelift Volkswagen Polo 6C boasts subtle changes to the exterior styling including redesigned bumpers. On the inside, there''s now a touch screen as standard and a new steering wheel.
