Volkswagen launched its luxury crossover SUV in 2002, which it called the Touareg; intended to be a mid-size 4x4 crossover with a luxury feel. The Touareg was designed as a joint venture between Volkswagen Group, Audi and Porsche, as part of a project to create an off-road vehicle with the handling and style of a sports car. A 300-man team, based at the Porsche main base in Germany, was led by Klaus-Gerhard Wolpert in creating the Touareg. It is built at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Slovakia, alongside the similar Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne.
