T1 - Type 2 (1950 To 1967)

The Volkswagen Type 2 T1 was launched in 1950. VW used the 1100 air cooled engine for the T1, which is a 1,131 cc 18 kW flat four cylinder boxer engine. They upgraded this to the 1,200cc in 1953, and again in 1959. However this proved troublesome, so Volkswagen recalled all of the 1,959cc models and replaced engines with upgraded 30 kW versions.

T2 - Type 2 (1967 To 1979)

The T2 Type 2 was introduced in 1967. The vehicle saw quite a significant change in design. It was slightly larger, and considerably heavier. It also lost its distinctive split front windscreen. The new T2 models even did away with the spring axle rear suspension and transfer boxes, and engines were upgraded. The Type 4 engine was an option from 1972 onwards, giving buyers a choice of engines ranging between 1.6 litres and 2.0 litres.

T3 - Type 2 (1979 To 1992)

The third generation of Transporter was both larger and heavier than its predecessor, featuring a more squared and less rounded style. Manufactured in Germany, the T3 was launched in 1979, giving buyers a wider selections of engines; from 1.6 litres to 2.6 litres, with a choice of both petrol and diesel.

T4 - Transporter (1990 To 2003)

The T4 was introduced in 1990. It was the first of the Transporter range to have a front mounted, water cooled engine. The T4 was available in van, platform and campervan body styles. It was a popular generation, with production lasting nearly 14 years. This is the second longest run out of the whole Transporter range, behind the T1.

T5 - Transporter (2003 To 2014)

The T5 Transporter was launched in 2002. Engine sizes ranged between 1.9 litres and 3.2 litres. It was available in van, pick-up, minibus, crew cab, kombi, shuttle, panel, chassis and campervan body styles. There''s something for everyone in this range. There''s even a Sportline model, which comes with a 174 PS Turbocharged Direct Injection diesel engine as standard, generating torque of 400 Nm at 2,000 rpm. The T5 received a facelift in 2009, which saw the introduction of Direct Shift Gearboxes (DSG).
