About Ignition Coils
The Volvo ignition coil is an essential part of the ignition of a vehicle. Each coil is used for one or two engine cylinders and so therefore there are several Volvo ignition coils in the ignition system. Each coil’s role is to transfer the power from the vehicles 12volt battery in to a much higher voltage of thousands of volts to create the spark in spark plugs. They are then told when to fire by an on-board computer. These coils have some form of resistor in them, which limits the amount of power transmitted to the coils from the 12volt battery.
Should a Volvo ignition coil fail, it is possible that this can cause its adjoined engine cylinder to misfire. This is the case even if all of the other coils are working correctly. Damage to the Volvo ignition coil may show on the dashboard as a ‘check engine’ light. Damage can be caused by worn spark plugs, which make the Volvo ignition coil work harder to compensate, or faulty wiring or components. The coils can also simply wear out through repeated use.
Volvo trivia
- There's a theatre in Ireland where the patrons all sit in seats from the Volvo S80 luxury saloon. A local Volvo dealer saw the seats being used at the launch of the S80 and asked Volvo if he could have some for his local theatre.
- Volvo invented the three-point seatbelt in 1959, and the company refused to patent it, believing that car safety was too important to not share.
- The Volvo V40 is considered the safest car ever made and has the highest score to ever been awarded by EuroNCAP.
- Volvo cars are renowned for safety, but they also have a good reputation when it comes to comfort as well. Volvo has worked with orthopaedic surgeons to help with seat design.
- Although many of their inventions were released to the public, Volvo has been responsible for so many cutting-edge inventions in car manufacturing that they have had to build an entire company division to deal solely with patent infringement.
