First Generation Volvo S40 (1995 - 2004)

The first generation Volvo S40 was released in August 1995. Its official premiere took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1995. The S40 had a drag coefficient of 0.32 and was the first whole model to be introduced under the direction of the British designer, Peter Horbury. The Mk1 was received well instantly and was named the ''Most Beautiful Estate Car in the World'' at an Italian award ceremony. Buyers had the choice of petrol and diesel engines ranging between 1.6 litres and 2.0 litres, with five and six speed automatic and manual transmissions.

Second Generation Volvo S40 (2004 - 2012)

The Mk2 Volvo S40 was introduced mid 2004 with a new designed based on the Volvo P1 platform. This generation of S40 was nominated for the World Car of the Year in 2005, and won the Best New Sport Compact category at the Canadian Car of the Year awards. Buyers have the choice of numerous powerful petrol and diesel engines, ranging between 1.6 litres and 2.5 litres, with a selection of five and six speed manual and automatic transmissions.

The Mk2 Volvo S40 received a facelift in 2008, seeing improved audio systems, increased storage space and new safety features such as Emergency Brake Lights. This new facelifted model was also offered with optional Active Bi-Xenon headlights.

History of Volvo S40

The Volvo S40 is a small family car that was in production between the years of 1995 and 2012. There were two generations of the S40, both of which were available in saloon and estate body types, offering buyers the choice of numerous petrol and diesel engines. The S40 was generally regarded as a reliable vehicle that offered good value and equipment. The Volvo S40 is known to be a reliable vehicle. In fact, Warranty Direct ranks it first out of a list of 25 family cars, with a reliability index score of 25, which is great in comparison to last place''s 201. This is based on a number of factors, such as the number of times it fails, the costs of repair and average time spent off road due to repairs. Auto Express describes the Volvo S40 as ''a family hatch-sized car with premium saloon ambitions''. They admire the S40 for its good value, equipment levels and driving position. However, they criticise its ''poor legroom, vague steering and dull styling''. What Car? describes it as a ''handsome looking saloon'' that is ''beautifully finished inside and out''. They do however mention that the boot and rear seats aren''t particularly spacious, and although it''s fun to drive they say it can be too firm.
