About Slam Panels

The Volvo slam panel is a structural panel that functions to absorb some of the impact of a crash, helping to protect the occupants of the car.

Built to be strong and solid, the Volvo slam panel is usually made of steel, and bolted onto the car, directly behind, and running the length of, the bumper.

The Volvo slam panel acts as a structural support to the bumper. The bumper's job is to absorb the impact of a head on collision, offering protection to both the car, by minimising damage to the frame and body of the car, as well as internal and external parts; and also the passengers and driver travelling inside the car.

If your car has been in an accident and there's damage to the slam panel it will need replacing.  Buying a new Volvo slam panel will ensure you get a part that's the right fit for the make and model of your car.

Volvo trivia

  • To test the strength of their vehicles, Volvo puts them through rigorous tests, including using a machine in their Gothenburg lab that was designed to test how buildings cope in earthquakes.
  • Volvo is Swedish and was founded in 1924 by two brothers who designed and built the ÖV 4 because they realised that other cars couldn't cope with Sweden's harsh weather. The car was given the name 'Jakob' and had both a 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine and a three-speed manual gearbox.
  • Although many of their inventions were released to the public, Volvo has been responsible for so many cutting-edge inventions in car manufacturing that they have had to build an entire company division to deal solely with patent infringement.
  • Volvo invented the three-point seatbelt in 1959, and the company refused to patent it, believing that car safety was too important to not share.
  • Volvo was the first manufacturer to install fog lights on the front and rear of their cars.
