Volvo V50 (2004 - 2012)

The first and only generation of the Volvo V50 began production in 2004. It was first introduced at the 2003 Bologna Motor Show as the estate version of the S40. Both models were manufactured in Ghent, Belgium. It featured interior ''theatre'' lighting, a floating centre stack and ''Volvo Intelligent Vehicle Architecture''. The V50 was made available with both petrol and diesel engines, ranging between 1.6 litres and 2.4 litres, with five- and six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. It offered a spacious interior, with a wheelbase of 2,640 mm.

The Volvo V50 received a facelift in 2008, with revised front styling and minor modifications to the interior. Volvo introduced optional active xenon headlights and improved audio systems, as well as increased power and torque of the T5 engine. They also made a D5 turbo-charged diesel engine with six-speed transmission.

The V50 was succeeded by a new model called the V40, which began production in 2013 and is still being sold now. This model is built on the Global C platform.

History of Volvo V50

The Volvo V50 is a small family car that was in production between 2004 and 2012. It shares the Ford C1 platform with the European Ford Focus and Mazda 3. Known for its high quality cabin and economical engines, the V50 is a very popular Volvo model in Europe. Honest John describes the V50 as a ''classy looking compact estate with very good ride comfort and tidy handling''. They also call the V50 the UK''s most popular Volvo. Carbuyer.co.uk praises the V50 for its tasteful, high quality cabin and economical diesel engines, however they describe it as not the most exciting to drive. It was awarded the ''Goldenes Lenkrad'', which is a prestigious Swedish award that translates to ''Golden Steering Wheel''. Warranty Direct ranked the Volvo V50 21st in a list of twenty six family cars, giving it a reliability score of 135. The scores are based on a number of factors related to reliability, such as the number of times a car fails, the costs of repair and average time spent off road due to repairs being done.
