The BMW i3 has recently won the 2014 World Green Car of the year award.

Not only did it win this award but it also won the World Car design of the year. It was awarded both of these awards at the 2014 New York Auto Show which is currently running and is open until April 27th.

Up until now the award has been won by the Tesla Model S. The competition is judged by a panel of 69 international automotive journalists, and the competitors are judged on several different environmental and economical issues. The competition included such vehicles as the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron and VW XL1.

The battery heating and cooling system on the i3 was praised for its ability to allow the vehicle to travel around 80-100 miles on a single charge. The i3 also offers zero tailpipe emissions.

"To have the BMW i3 named World Green Car of the Year is a great honour. From the production process onwards, the BMW i3 is a truly sustainable vehicle, created with the needs of the 21st century city in mind." said Dr Ian Robertson of the BMW management team.

The BMW i3 also won the World car design of the year, beating the likes of the Mercedes C-Class and Mazda3 to the award. Design experts said that the i3 is a: "clean-sheet-of-paper car designed from the ground up for efficiency, with the different needs of the new century’s megacities in mind."

The BMW i3 was first produced in 2013 for the 2014 model and you can view our full review by clicking here.
