BME 520i History

The first generation (1972-81) of the 5-series was the first BMW car to use the now traditional 3 digit number, with the first number representing the series and the next two the engine size, e.g. 520. The second generation (1982-88) altered the look of this car with new lights, bumpers and a squarer rear end compared with its predecessor.

The third generation (1988-96) gave this car a total new look, with a much more modern appearance. This was one of the most successful BMW cars and it won awards for its safety and reliability. The fourth generation (1995-2003) was considered the top of the mid sized executive class of this time.

The fifth generation (2003-10) changed the look dramatically and received some mixed reviews, with some claiming it had moved away from traditional BMW design. The technology in this version was a great improvement on the previous version. The sixth generation (2010-present) is the current version in production and went back to more traditional BMW design. Its design is based on the 7-series platform.
