Mazda Rx-7 Overview

The Mazda RX-7 was in production from 1978-2002 ans was produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturing company Mazda. This vehicle was produced over three different generations and is a 2-door sports coupé. This vehicle was a replacement for the RX-3 and was eventually replaced by the RX-8. This is a neatly styled car which has very good engines and performs extremely well. It has excellent handling and is great fun to drive. It might not be very spacious inside, but you may find that's what you would expect from a car of this type. It is a well equipped car which also has a decent driving position and is a very good little sports car overall. Does this sound like your experience of the RX-7?

Mazda Rx-7 History

The first generation (1978-85) was released in 1978 and has the pop up style headlights. It has a sleek looking design and the Series 1 was produced from 1978-80. The Series 2 was produced from 1981-83 and the Series 3 from 1983-85.

The second generation (1986-91) was released in 1986 and the Series 4 was produced from 1986-88. This version gave the vehicle an updated look and a convertible version was available from 1988. The Series 5 was produced from 1989-91.

The third generation (1992-2002) version featured an updated body design which was much smoother. In 1993 this car won the import car of the year in Motor Trend magazine. Series 6 was in production from 1992-95 and Series 7 from 1996-98. Series 8 was the final RX-7 to be produced and was in production from 1999-2002. It was replaced by the Mazda RX-8.

Fuel Economy

The Mazda RX-7 is available with a 1.3L petrol engine and the first generation version also had a 1.15L engine available. The 1.3L engine offers around 25mpg which is pretty good for a car of this type. How did the engine on your RX-7 perform in terms of fuel economy?


The Mazda RX-7 was available with 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual gearboxes. The first generation also had 3-speed automatic and 4-speed manual gearboxes available.
