Volvo 740 Overview

The Volvo 740 is classed as a mid-sized luxury car and was produced by the Swedish automobile company Volvo Cars. The 740 was in production from 1984 – 92 and was part of the Volvo 700-series. This car was available as a 4-door saloon and a 5-door estate and was the second 700 series car to be released, being the more affordable version than the earlier 760. The 740 is a very spacious car with a luxurious feel to it. They are very comfortable with great safety features. They are great value for money and are very reliable cars. Volvo 740 History

Two years after the introduction of the Volvo 700 series the 740 was released in 1984 as a more affordable version of the luxurious 760. The 740 was originally intended as a more luxurious version to the 200 series. In 1990 the 740 had a slight makeover which mainly affected the headlights and rear lights and also some mechanical improvements. In 1992, the last year of production for this vehicle, it received a newly designed dashboard, similar to the dashboard in the 760. In 1992 this car was replaced with the Volvo 940.

Fuel Economy

The Volvo 740 had the following engines available: 2.0 and 2.3L petrol and 2.4L turbo diesel. The 2.4L turbo diesel was the more economical of these engines and offered up to 40mpg which was reasonable. Which engine did you have and how did it perform economically? Transmission
