The South Korean manufacturing company Daewoo have won a contract to build 'ice breaking' tankers for Yamal LNG.
The ice breaking tankers will be built by the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. division of the company. The contract is for the production of several ice class ARC7 tankers which are to be used to transport LNG (Liquid Natural Gas).
Novatek, Vnesheconombank, and Sovkomflot decided last year that they will combine to help in the production of several tankers for the Yamal LNG project. Vnesheconombank were to be responsible for financing the operation and Sovkomflot were to perform the duties of technical manager. They were to employ a well established ship builder to build the tankers, and Daewoo won this contract.
The contract states that the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. will build, launch, equip and deliver 16 ice breaking tankers of the ice class ARC7. This contract also gives Daewoo the responsibility of establishing preliminary costs and the schedules. They will also be responsible for training the Russian Yamal LNG engineers and the running of the subcontract work at the Russian shipyard.
These ice breaking tankers are capable of pushing through over 2 metre thick ice by themselves and can operate in temperatures as low as -50 degrees Celsius. Each ship will be worth $367.4 million and the first one will not be delivered until the end of June 2016.
