Ford spare parts as well as those from other manufacturers could branch into the field of telecommunications in the future as part of solutions to growing levels of traffic on the world's roads.
Ford chief executive Bill Ford has called for greater integration of telecommunication devices within the automobile sector as part of efforts to create an "inter-connected transport system".
Speaking at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, he argued that technology that allows communication between vehicles and transport infrastructure can help solve the growing problem of overcrowded roads.
Such a system will also help save time, conserve resources, lower emissions and improve safety by better organising traffic flows through technology.
Mr Ford also used the occasion to announce the global launch of AppLink - a feature which allows drivers to control apps on their smartphones using voice control - as part of its SYNC voice-control and in-car connectivity system.
Ford said it will work with a variety of app developers around the world to help develop the system.
