Making sure you replace faulty or worn out car parts as soon as possible is vital to ensure that your vehicle is kept in safe working order.

This is especially so for drivers who use their cars regularly and clock up a large annual mileage and on this basis, Ford spare parts could be in particularly high demand.

According to new figures from Warranty Direct, the manufacturer's Mondeo model is the most heavily used car in the UK.

The average Mondeo racks up over 15,000 miles every year, meaning it covers a greater distance than any other car on UK roads at nearly 600 more miles annually than the next most-used car - the Volvo S80.

"The Mondeo's always been a favourite with company car drivers, and it appears they rarely stay idle for long. Despite this, they are reliable too," said Warranty Direct managing director Duncan McClure Fisher.

Unsurprisingly, the company's research shows that larger vehicles are more likely to be driven more, with both the Volkswagen Passat and the Audi A6 also covering more than 14,000 miles a year on average.

Small cars, on the other hand, are more likely to be used for shorter or less frequent journeys, with superminis making up nine out of the UK's ten least-used cars.

The Nissan Micra is used less than any other car in the UK, with the average Micra driver racking up just 5,580 miles per year.

Warranty Direct also found a direct correlation between car use and the frequency of maintenance issues.

The ten least-used cars have a collective average breakdown rate of 21 per cent, compared to 34 per cent for the most-used cars.

However, the Mondeo's reliability doesn't appear to be compromised by its large mileage, with the car recording a breakdown rate of just 15 per cent.
