The Fiat Chrysler Group have recently announced a recall which will affect the 2014 Fiat 500L.

The 500L is the mini MPV based on the city car Fiat 500. You can read our full review of the Fiat 500 by clicking here.

This latest recall was announced on Saturday (15-03-14) and will affect over 18,000 Fiat 500L vehicles in the US. The exact figure is 18,092 and will affect vehicles built between 05-04-2013 and 22-01-2014.

These vehicles are all built at the Fiat production plant in Serbia and the reason for the recall is due to a problem with the transmission shifter. The transmission shifter can either be delayed or even worse, it may not work at all.

This problem can mean that there is an increased opportunity for the vehicle crashing and it has also been reported that the vehicle may not come out of Park. A document was released on Saturday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration saying that the signals between the ECU and gear shifter can be negatively affected in cold temperatures. As mentioned above, this can cause delays in the gear shifts, or result in the car not shifting gear at all.

Fiat will notify the vehicle owners very soon and plan to have dealerships replace the shifter module and update the software at some point in April. Fiat have reported that there has been no injuries or accidents caused by this issue to date.
