Mercedes Sprinter Overview

The Mercedes Sprinter is classed as a light commercial vehicle and is produced by the German automobile manufacturers Mercedes-Benz, which is part of the Daimler AG Group. This vehicle is available as a van, minibus and chassis cab and has been on the market since 1995. These vans are extremely well built and tough, which is what you come to expect form a Mercedes vehicle. They hold their value well but can be expensive to repair and maintain and are costly to buy.

Mercedes Sprinter History

The first generation (1995-2006) was first produced on the European market as a replacement for the Mercedes-Benz TN. This vehicle was built on the T1N platform and came in long and short wheelbase versions. In its first year the Sprinter won 1995 International van of the year. This version never made an appearance in the US until 2001 where it was originally marketed as a Freightliner, and then sold as a Dodge from 2003.

The second generation (2006 - present ) is the current version in production. This version is built on the Ford Transit VJX platform and is a very robust and reliable version. This version has quite a few different wheelbases available in terms of height, weight and dual or single rear wheels.

Fuel Economy

This vehicle has a great range of diesel engines available. There were 2.1, 2.3, 2.7, 2.9 and 3.0L diesel engines and there was 3.5L V6 petrol engine which was not a good choice in terms of economy. The diesel engines offer an average of about 30-35mpg which is quite good for a commercial van.

Transmission

The first generation Sprinter had 5 speed manual and automatic gearboxes and the second generation has 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes available. We have a section of our website dedicated to Mercedes gearbox parts where you can look to find the exact gearbox part for your Sprinter.
