The 2014 Vauxhall Meriva is now on the market and the new 1.6 CDTi is available at a price of £19,340.
The Meriva is a mini MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) which is produced by Vauxhall Motors. This latest installation is a facelifted version of the second generation (2010-present). If you want to read our full Vauxhall Meriva review click here.
This vehicle is a 5 seater version of the larger 7-seater Vauxhall Zafira and is a very decent little vehicle but on first appearances there is not that many changes made to the new 2014 version compared with the original second generation model.
The most important alterations have taken place below the bonnet, to the engines and gearbox. The second generation Meriva has been criticised for their diesel engines lacking in refinement and efficiency. Although the performance of the 1.3 and 1.7L diesel engines is really good, they are lacking in the above mentioned areas.
This is no longer an issue since the introduction of the new 1.6L CDTi diesel engine, known as the “whisper diesel”. This engine is more refined and has an increased performance, offering 134bhp and is more efficient, with around 64mpg fuel economy. This engine also improves emissions, from 139g/km to 116g/km and means a saving of around £95 a year in road tax.
It is the engine refinement that seems to be the greatest improvement of this car, with Vauxhall claiming that this is the quietest diesel in the mini MPV class. Also the new improved 6-speed manual gearbox allows for quicker and more precise gear changes.
The 2014 Meriva still has the rear hinged back doors, making for easy access for mobility and for children. The only rear changes to the exterior design are the front bumper, front grille design and the rear lights design.
The 1.6L diesel version can do up to 122mph and can do 0-62mph in under 10 seconds (9.9 seconds to be exact).
