Figures have just been released which have shown that more than 600,000 vehicles were caught speeding in one single week earlier this year. The figures were released by TISPOL which is the European Traffic Police Network and covered the whole of Europe between 14-20 April 2014. This spanned 29 European countries.

The exact figures released were 605,523 and this was part of an operation by TISPOL to combat the problems of speeding and dangerous driving. Of the many drivers caught for speeding, they were either caught on speed cameras or stopped by the police. It is stated that each case was dealt with accordingly.

Not only did this high amount of speeding issues get dealt with during the operation, there was also 504 drug possession charges, 400 wanted people caught and there were 42 firearm offences dealt with.

This is what Koen Ricour the president of TISPOL has to say about the subject of speeding: “Speed limits are in place for a reason, to reduce casualties and keep the roads safe for everyone. Unfortunately there are some drivers who see speed limits as optional and others who regard them as an inconvenience. But speed limits are there to save lives. Drivers who either exceed the speed limit or drive at a speed that's inappropriate for the road, traffic or weather conditions, are more likely to be involved in a collision. At best this will result in damage and delay; at worst it can lead to serious injury or death.”

“We urge all motorists to demonstrate care and consideration for themselves, their families and others by driving safely at an appropriate speed, and certainly within the speed limit at all times. In this way, drivers will be greatly reducing the risk of killing or seriously injuring themselves or other road users.”

As speeding is such an issue in the UK and across the rest of the world, would you welcome more operations like this or are you one of the offending types? We would welcome such operations if it were to make drivers drive more carefully.
