Toyota Picnic Overview
The Toyota Picnic is classed as a compact MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) and is produced by the Japanese car manufacturing company Toyota. These vehicles are commonly known as people carriers, and this vehicle is marketed under many different names including: Toyota Ipsum, Toyota SportsVan and Avensis Verso depending on which country it is being sold in. These vehicles are very affordable, reliable and are good to drive but are not as accomplished as some its competitors.
Toyota Picnic History
The Toyota Picnic was in production from 1995 – 2009 and came in 2 different generations. The Toyota Previa had been well established in the MPV market since the 90’s and they wanted a vehicle in the compact MPV class. The first generation (1995-2001) was available in 1.8 and 2.0L petrol and there was also a 2.2L diesel engine on the market. This was to be the last version known as the Picnic.
The second generation (2001-09) had a re-design, based on the Toyota Avensis platform, and is now known as the Avensis Verso. This version is slightly larger than its predecessor and offered a different range of engines. This vehicle ceased production in 2009.
As this vehicle was only in production across 2 generations there weren’t many engines across the range. The petrol versions were: 1.8, 2.0 and 2.4L, and the diesel options were: 2.0 and 2.2L. The diesel engines are more economical, offering up to an average of 36 mpg. Remember to think about age, fuel type, engine size and gearbox type when considering fuel economy.
There were 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual gearboxes available for this vehicle. We have a section of our website dedicated to Toyota gearbox parts where you can locate your Picnic gearbox parts.
