Vauxhall Carlton Overview

The Vauxhall Carlton is classed as a mid-sized executive car which was produced by the British automobile manufacturing company Vauxhall Motors, which is the UK division of Opel. This vehicle was in production from 1978 when it replaced the Vauxhall Viceroy up to 1994 when it was replaced with the Vauxhall Omega. These cars are solid, well built cars which have lots of interior space and storage space. They are very comfortable and handle really well. They are good rear drive cars but are showing their age these days, with the engines and gearboxes showing it. Does this sound anything like your experience of this car?

Vauxhall Carlton History

The Mark I (1978-86) Vauxhall Carlton was introduced in 1978 as a replacement for the ageing Vauxhall Viceroy. The design for this vehicle was based on the Opel Rekord and was a large vehicle which was available in saloon and estate versions. This car was originally only available in 2.0L petrol and had some state of the art features for this era, including: alloy wheels and electric windows. There was a facelift version in 1983 which saw the introduction of more trim levels and engines.

The Mark II (1986-94) won European car of the year in its first year. This version saw the introduction of the larger 2.6 and 3.0L petrol engines. This vehicle ceased production in 1994 and was replaced with the Vauxhall Omega.

Fuel Economy

The Vauxhall Carlton was available in 1.8, 2.0, 2.6 and 3.0L petrol and 2.0 and 2.3L diesel engines. The diesel engines were the more economical of the engines, and the bigger petrol engines were very greedy on fuel. Which engine did you have and how did it perform economically? Remember to think about the fuel type, engine size and age of the vehicle when considering fuel economy for a motor vehicle.

Transmission

The Vauxhall Carlton was available in both manual and automatic gearboxes. Which gearbox did you have and how do you rate its performance? You can have a look at the Vauxhall gearbox section of our website to find the exact gearbox parts you need for your Carlton.
