Toyota Rav4 Overview

The Toyota Rav4 is classed as a crossover SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) and is produced by the Japanese Automobile manufacturer Toyota. This was the first vehicle of its type to be introduced to both Europe and Japan. These vehicles combine the benefits of an SUV with the fuel economy of a car. The Toyota Rav4 is a great off road vehicle, which is available in both front wheel drive and 4x4 which is the most popular choice. It’s not the best ride or most refined of this class but is a very tough and capable crossover SUV. Does this sound like your experience of the Rav4?

Toyota Rav4 History

The first generation (1994-2000) was originally designed on a platform which was based on the Corolla. It was available in 2 and 4-door versions and won Automobile of the year in 1997 in Automobile magazine.

In 1998 it had a makeover which slightly altered the appearance of the vehicle and a soft top version became available.

The second generation (2000-2005) gave the vehicle a more modern look and was available in many different models where the higher spec versions had some great features including ABS, air-conditioning and cruise control. In 2003 this version had a slight makeover which improved the equipment and altered some exterior parts such as the bumpers and lights.

The third generation (2005-12) Rav4 was built on an all new platform, which changed the appearance of this vehicle. They also offered both short and long wheel base versions. It received a makeover in 2008 and 2011, which didn’t change the appearance to much.

There is to be a fourth generation version from the end of 2012.

Fuel Economy

The different engines available for the Toyota Rav4 are 2.0, 2.4, 2.5 and 3.5L petrol and 2.0 and 2.2L diesel. The most economic of these available engines is the latest 2.2L diesel which offers up to 48mpg. How did your Toyota Rav4 fair in terms of fuel economy? Remember to consider the age, fuel type and engine size when determining fuel economy.
