Toyota TownAce Overview
The Toyota TownAce is classed as a compact MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) and was produced from 1978-2007 across several different generations. The appearance changed dramatically over the years to meet with contemporary fashions. These vehicles were originally designed as 7 or 8 seater ‘space cruisers’ or otherwise known ‘people carriers’. They are neat and compact on the outside and are surprisingly spacious on the inside. They are a good ride and also available as a van.
Toyota TownAce History
The TownAce was produced over four generations: First generation (1978-85), Second Generation (1986-92), Third Generation (1993-96) and the Fourth Generation (1997-2007).
This vehicle was originally designed in 1978 as a short wheel base luxury 7 or 8 seater for the Japanese market. Due to the popularity of the vehicle it went on the world market soon after. The first 2 generations were pretty similar, but in 1993 it was designed on a different platform, the CR31.
The fourth generation version again changed the look of this vehicle and it became popular as a small panel van as well as the compact people carrier. It was discontinued in 2007.
There were four different engines available for the final version of this vehicle. The petrol options were 1.5 and 1.8L and the diesel options were 2.0 and 2.2L. The diesel engines are the most economical of the available engines. Remember to take into consideration the age, fuel type and engine size when determining fuel economy.
There were 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual gearboxes for this vehicle. We have a section of our website dedicated to Toyota gearbox parts if you want to find the gearbox related part fort your TownAce.
