Ford Escort Van Overview

The Ford Escort Van is a small panel van based on the Ford Escort small family car. These vehicles were produced by the European division of the American manufacturers The Ford Motor Company. The Escort van has spawned over several generations, from 1968 – 2000, when the Escort was replaced with the Ford Focus, but there was to be no van version. These vans are cheap to buy and maintain. They are not the best to drive but are a good option to consider if you are after a cheap second hand van. Does this sound like your experience of the Escort Van?

Ford Escot Van History

The Ford Escort Van has been available over six different generations. The Mark I (1968-74) was the first version of the Ford Escort and the panel van version was introduced a few months after. This van was to become very successful over its lifetime. The Mark II (1975-80) was a lot squarer design and carried on the popularity of the Escort van version.

The Mark III (1980-86) was a complete re-design and totally changed the look of the Escort. The biggest change was the move to front wheel drive. The Mark IV (1986-90) wasn’t that much different than its predecessor in terms of looks but had more engines available.

The Mark V (1990-95) had a new design and was built on a new platform. It was a lot rounder in shape but received criticism for its lack of refinement. In 1992 this version had a makeover. The Mark VI (1995-2000) was based on the previous version and was to be the last version produced, ceasing production in 2000.

Fuel Economy

The final version of the Ford Escort Van was available in 1.3L petrol and 1.8L diesel engines. The most economical of these engines was the 1.8L diesel engine, which offered up to 55mpg which is good for a commercial van. Which engine did you have in your Escort Van and how did it fair economically? Remember to consider age, fuel type and engine size when considering fuel economy.
