Jeep Cherokee 4x4 Overview

The Jeep Cherokee 4x4 is classed as a compact SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) produced by the American automobile manufacturing company Jeep, which is part of: The Chrysler Group. The Jeep Cherokee has been in production since 1974, but the current version since 2002. The current version is also known as the Jeep Liberty in the US. These 4x4 vehicles are great off-road, have plenty space inside and have a great driving position. They are very greedy on fuel, especially the petrol versions and are costly to maintain.

Jeep Cherokee 4x4 History

The Jeep Cherokee XJ version was produced from 1984-2001, and was the first compact SUV of the Jeep Cherokee range. This vehicle replaced the full size SJ version in 1984. In 1997 the Jeep Cherokee had a makeover to both interior and exterior parts, bringing it up to a more modern looking vehicle.

The first generation KJ (2002-07) was a replacement for the XJ version which was discontinued in 2001. This vehicle had a really stylish and modern look and was the smallest 4x4 Jeep on the market at the time. It fitted between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee in price.

The second generation KK (2008-12) went for the more off-road look and had a total re-design from its predecessor. This vehicle ceased production in 2012 and will be replaced with the new Cherokee in 2013.

Extreme Sport

Fuel Economy

The KJ Cherokee is available in the following engines: 2.4 and 3.7L petrol and 2.5 and 2.8L diesel. The most economical of these engines is the 2.5L diesel which offers up to 31mpg. In general these are not the most economical of vehicles but they were designed more for power and performance than for fuel economy. The petrol versions are greedy on fuel.

The available gearboxes for this vehicle are 5 and 6-speed manual, and 4-speed automatic. We have a section of our website dedicated to Jeep gearbox parts, where you should be able to find your Cherokee 4x4 gearbox parts.
