Mercedes 300D History

The W123 (1977-85) was the first version to use the 300D name for the 3.0L diesel engine. The W123 was slightly larger than the previous W115 Mercedes and had a new styling. There was saloon, long wheel base and estate versions of this car. Previously the 3.0L diesel version was known as the 240D. This car was extremely popular and had a waiting list of up to 12 months at one point.

The W124 (1985-96) had a much more modern styling than the previous version and was renowned for its high Mercedes build quality. This car was very aerodynamic and had some innovative design features for its time which really reduced fuel consumption. In 1993 the E-class cars started to use the E300 name instead of 300D, which meant the 300D name was last used that year.
