The 3.2L engine replaced the 3.0L engine. There was saloon, estate, coupe and convertible versions available. The W210 (1996-2003) model replaced the W124 in 1996 and took the E-class range a bit more upmarket. This version had a makeover in 1999 affecting the aesthetics and mechanics of the car.
The W211 (2003-09) improved on the previous version and was considered classier. This meant it was more competitive with the 5-series BMW range. In 2006 this version had a makeover which mainly addressed the technical issues of the initial W211. This was the last version to produce the E320.
