Are you interested in buying a used car? If so we have some tips for buying a used car.

1. How much do you want to spend?

Remember that you not only need to take into consideration the marked price for the vehicle (or if you are any good at haggling the price down, even better) but take into consideration the cost of insurance, road tax, fuel, servicing and repairs.

2. Viewing conditions

Always make sure you view the vehicle in daylight so you can get a proper look. Take along a friend, or preferably someone who knows a bit about cars. Try get the viewing at their place so you can get an idea of how trustworthy they are and get a look at where the car has been and if the address matches the one on the legal documentation.

3. Check documentation

Make sure that you see the log book, current insurance, MOT certificate and check that the vehicle has full service history.

4. Test drive

Make sure you take the vehicle for a test drive so you can get a feel for how it drives and also to see if there are any problems with the car running. Ensure you drive for at least 10 minutes on a range of different road types.

5. Check for clocking

Car clocking is back on the increase. Read our article here. Common signs of clocking are exposed screw heads, misaligned digits on the mileage, very low mileage on an old car and general condition. Have a HPI test done (see below).

6. Have an HPI check

HPI is the primary provider of vehicle information in the UK and is a good place to look for such things as if the car has been in a major accident, if it is stolen, the mileage (to check for clocking) and several other important details about the car. This is well worth doing.

7. Independent inspection

If you are still having any doubts about the used car then you may want to consider having an independent inspection carried out by a reputable company such as RAC or Green Flag. This would help determine any major issues but remember it will cost you.
