The number of new cars getting registered in the UK has been on the rise and a new record has been set.

The month of May has been the 27th month of year on year increases in new car registrations. This has broken a long standing record that has been in place since 1989. This is great news for automobile manufacturing companies and is a much needed boost which clearly shows that the automobile world is clearly back on the increase after many years of struggles related to the recent recession.

In May 2014 there were 194,032 UK car registrations which is a 7.7% increase over May 2013. These statistics are taken from the Society of Motor Manufacturing and Traders (SMMT). Mike Hawes is the chief executive of SMMT and this is what he had to say about this sales increase: "Over the past 27 months, increasingly-confident consumers have been drawn to some fantastic new products, attracted by innovative technologies, improved fuel economy and competitive deals helping make a new car more affordable.”

The Ford Fiesta remains the top selling car in the UK for the month of May, with the Volkswagen Golf taking second place and the Vauxhall Corsa close behind in third place. However this does not reflect the exact 2014 sales so far in the UK.

So far in 2014 the Ford Fiesta has been the top selling car with 58,940 registrations in the UK. The Ford Focus is second with 37,355 registrations and the Vauxhall Corsa third with 34,322 sales. The Volkswagen Golf is next with 31,596, Vauxhall Astra 26,062 and then the Nissan Qashqai with 20,834 registrations. The Volkswagen Polo has 20,687 registrations, the Audi A3 has 19,223, Fiat 500 has 17,509 and the BMW 3-Series completes the top ten with 16,246 registrations.

In the past ten years from 2004 to 2013 there has been a real increase in some other areas too. New cars registered with Alloy wheels has jumped from 65 to 81% and the cars with air conditioning as standard has risen from 75 to 95%.
