While most of us can attempt a few car repairs and mods here and there, it is often necessary to turn to the expert hands of a mechanic for more complicated jobs, such as installing a new gearbox replacement, or fitting a replacement engine.
But for many drivers turning over their beloved motor to a stranger is an experience fraught with stress with the owner left wondering if the work will be carried out properly or if they will be charged fairly by the garage.
Praise be, then, for a new list of the UK's 100 most trustworthy and reliable garages, as voted for by the customers themselves.
Compiled by Motor Codes, a provider of codes of practice for the car service and repair industry, the poll revealed the top garages in each region of the country, based on a poll of several thousand motorists.
"We want people to be able to choose where to trust their car with confidence," said Chris Mason, managing director at Motor Codes points.
"And what better way to make people aware of consistently good businesses than letting customers shout about the good guys?”
The list of the 100 top garages will now form the shortlist for Motor Code's Garage of the Year 2012 competition.
Members of the public have until April 22nd to continue voting for their favourite garage on the list.
The list reflects a diverse range of businesses across the UK, from small independent workshops to large nationwide chains.
As such the shortlisted finalists in the Garage of the Year competition are split by business size, with entrants fighting for the best small and large garage prizes.
Earlier this year, a Kwik Fit survey found that motorists value trust above all else when choosing a garage.
The poll revealed that 45 per cent of drivers say that the number one reason they return to a garage they have used before is that they trust it will do the job well, above price (24 per cent) and convenience (20 per cent).
