The Vauxhall Ampera may significantly boost the sale of Vauxhall car parts in near future.
Vauxhall spare parts for electric-powered vehicles could become a common site in garages up and down the UK in the months to come with the manufacturer releasing the Ampera in the country this week.
And the manufacturer is predicting that the launch of the battery-powered Ampera will significantly boost the uptake of electric vehicles in the UK.
Vauxhall Ampera popularity
The Vauxhall Ampera has already proved popular in the US, where it was launched as the GM Volt, and the company is expecting similar success on this side of the Atlantic.
Vauxhall forecasts it will sell 3,500 units of the £30,000 car this year, or 5,000 in a full year.
Speaking to the Guardian, a spokeswoman said its target of 10,000 sales across Europe in 2012 was "in our reach quite easily".
In comparison, only around 1,000 purely electric cars were sold in the UK last year, and figures for first quarter sales in 2012 show that registrations of new electric cars have remained flat.
According to Vauxhall, its car will solve one of the biggest problems associated with electric vehicles - that their limited range could leave drivers stranded before they have finished their journey and then needing to wait several hours to recharge the batteries.
But in the Ampera, once the battery runs a petrol engine provides back-up power for a further 310 miles.
The manufacturer claims that because the petrol is used to drive an electric motor, the car should still be classified as purely electric rather than a hybrid, such as the Toyota Prius.
The launch of the Ampera follows last month's UK release of Renault's latest electric vehicle the Fluence ZE.
This uses Renault's innovative new pricing structure, in which customers lease the battery from the manufacturer rather than owning it outright.
Under this arrangement, Renault is able to significantly undercut its electric car rivals - with the Fluence costing from just £17,500, plus £76 a month to lease the battery.
