Mercedes A140 Overview

The Mercedes A140 is classed as a supermini car and is produced by the German car manufacturing company Mercedes-Benz. The A140 is part of the A-series range, which is the smallest car of the Mercedes collection. The A-series is the entry level car for Mercedes. These cars have a surprising amount of room inside for a supermini car and they are very compact little cars. They are very reliable, stylish and practical little cars, but are expensive compared with some competitors in this class. They maintain their price when selling on. Does this sound like your experience of the Mercedes A140?

Mercedes A140 History

The Mercedes A140 was only available in the first generation (1997-2004) of the A-class range. This car is different from all other Mercedes in that it is front wheel drive and has an innovative design feature, the ‘sandwich’, where the engine slides underneath the car in the event of a frontal collision. One safety feature led these cars to being recalled to modify the suspension and add stability control. It flipped over in one of the safety tests called the ‘elk’ test, so they had to be recalled to fix the problem.

There is a second generation (2004-12) A-series which didn’t feature the A140 and there is a new third generation (2012 - ) planned for release at the end of the year which has totally changed the look and is now classed as a small family car to compete with the BMW 1-series and Audi A3.
