Audi A4 Overview

The Audi A4 is a continuation of the Audi 80 and is classed as a compact executive car. Audi is part of the Volkswagen group and are made in Germany. Any vehicle coming from the Volkswagen range is seen as a very reliable car and extremely well built. It has a very spacious interior and vast range of engine sizes to choose from. This vehicle looks stylish and drives well at the same time. There are not many vehicles on the road as reliable yet stylish as the Audi range.

Audi A4 History

The first generation (1994-2001) is built on the Volkswagen B5 platform and is a front wheel drive car. Some variations of the A4 came in the Audi Quattro 4x4 platform and were initially designed as a saloon with the estate version coming the following year. The automatic version was introduced in this range and the whole range had a bit of a makeover with new engines and body makeover. The S4 was converted from the Audi 100 to the A4 series.

The second generation A4 (2001-2005) was built on the Volkswagen B6 platform and offered a whole new range of engines. The A4 cabriolet was introduced in this range as the previous Audi 80 cabriolet had been discontinued. The design of the body remained much the same but the boot was changed slightly.

The third generation B7 (2005-08) was still built on the B6 platform but had some serious changes to the suspension, steering, engines, navigation systems as well as other areas. As this version ended it was changed to the Seat Exeo in 2008 and remodelled and rebranded.

The fourth generation B8 (2008 - present) is built on the Audi Modular Longitudinal platform and is the version in production today. The handling of the A4 was greatly improved due to this new design structure. The vehicle has increased in size and offers more space inside for passengers and storage.

Fuel economy

The different engine sizes on the A4 vary from generation to generation. They come in as little as the 1.6 right up to the 3.5 in petrol engines. The diesel engines range from 1.9 – 3.0. As some of the engines are turbos, V6’s or standard then this seriously affects the fuel economy of the vehicle. Obviously the smaller the engine the better the economy and the diesel engines allow for better economic value than the petrol counterparts.

The older generations of the A4 came in both 5 and 6 speed automatic and manual gearboxes. The newer versions have tiptronic, S-tronic and Multitronic gearboxes available as well as the 5 and 6 speed manual versions.
