BMW 1-Series Overview

The BMW 1-Series is classed as a small family car which is produced by the German automobile manufacturing company BMW. The 1-Series has been in production since 2004 and is currently in its second generation. The 1-series was introduced as a replacement for the 3-series compact range and is now the entry level BMW vehicle. These are cool looking little cars which are the only rear wheel drive hatchback in this class. They are great fun to drive, handle pretty well and are fairly reliable. They combine good performance with pretty good fuel economy and also have some good safety features. They do lack space in the rear and are not the most comfortable cars in this class. Does this sound like your experience of the 1-series?

BMW 1-Series History

The first generation (2004-2011) was a direct replacement for the BMW 3-series compact and shares many of its parts with the E90 3-series, in-fact 60% of the components are shared. The hatchback was initially only available in 5-door, and the 3-door version was released in 2007. There are also coupe and convertible versions available. The hatchback had a facelift in 2007 and the coupe and convertible in 2011. The Coupe and Convertible are still sold as this version.

The second generation (2012-present) is only available in 3 and 5 door hatchback versions. As mentioned above, the coupe and convertible versions are still built under the 1st generation model. There ain't that much difference between this version and the previous version.
