Fiat 126 Overview

The Fiat 126 is classed as a city car which was produced by the Italian automobile manufacturing company Fiat. This car was in production from 1972 to 1992 and as late as 2000 in Poland. This car was introduced as a replacement for the Fiat 500 and was then replaced by the Fiat Cinquecento in 1993. There are not too many of these left on the roads in the UK these days, but these small little cars were seen as being good to drive and especially useful around town. They were good economically, fun to drive and have quite good handling. They are very noisy, not very spacious or comfortable, but they are cheap to buy if you can find a decent one. Does this sound anything like your experience of the 126?

Fiat 126 History

The Fiat 126 was first introduced in 1972 as a direct replacement for the Fiat 500. it was based on the same platform as its predecessor and also had the same rear mounted engine. The main difference was the body design, which was a smaller version of the Fiat 127. In 1977 fiat enlarged the engine slightly, to the 652cc but the smaller 594cc was available until 1983. A water cooled 704cc was introduced later in 1977 and was known as the BIS. In 1992 the Fiat Cinquecento replaced the discontinued 126, which remained in production until 2000 in Poland.
