Honda Insight Overview
The Honda Insight is classed as a hybrid electric car which is produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturing company Honda. The first generation of this vehicle fell into the supermini class and the second generation into the small family car category. The current version of these cars were the cheapest hybrid cars on both the UK and US markets. They are very cheaply priced, well equipped and are practical vehicles. The hybrid engines are not the most powerful and lack refinement. They are also not the best rides, with poor handling and performance. They do have some great safety features and are pretty spacious. Does this sound like your experience of this vehicle?
Honda Insight History
The first generation (1999-2006) was introduced in 1999 and was the first Honda vehicle to feature their Integrated Motor Assist system. This vehicle was also the first hybrid to be sold in North America. This first generation version has a distinctive design which makes it easily identifiable. This version was classed as a supermini and had a 5-speed manual gearbox available until 2001 when the CVT gearbox was preferred.
The second generation (2009-present) was introduced in 2009 and was a larger vehicle, placing it in the small family car class. They also didn't have such drastic styling, but due to the larger size and weight, it is not as economical as the previous version. This version had a facelift in 2010 and is the current version on the market.
The Honda Insight is available with a 1.3L petrol/electric hybrid engine. These engines are pretty good economically as you would expect, offering around 68mpg. The first generation offered slightly more, around 76mpg. How do you find the engine on your Insight in terms of fuel economy?
