Jeep Grand Cherokee History
The first Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ version (1993-98) was designed as a replacement for the smaller Cherokee and was available in three versions: Base, Laredo and Limited. The Base version was the cheapest; Laredo was mid range and Limited was top of the range.
The WJ (1999-2004) had a new design and only used 127 parts from the previous version. This model came with the new ‘Quadra-Drive’ automatic four wheel drive option. The new design produced better fuel economy and better on-road performance.
The WK (2005-10) was the first version to include the new Quadra-Drive II four wheel drive system. This vehicle again improved the on-road performance to try and make it a lore popular choice in its class. This version had a makeover in 2008, mainly affecting the headlights design.
The WK2 (2010 - ) is the current version in production and has a new stylish design while maintaining the Jeep look. This version won many awards for several factors including: best in class and safety.
The Grand Cherokee has been available in several different engines across the generations. The petrol options have been: 3.7, 4.0, 4.7, 5.2, 5.7, 5.9, 6.1 and 6.4L and the earlier diesel engines have been available in 2.5, 2.7 and 3.1L, with the latest version offering 3.0L diesel. The most economical is the 3.0L diesel which offers up to 34mpg, but the petrol engines are really greedy on fuel, especially the larger sized engines.
