Mercedes SLK Overview
The Mercedes SLK is classed as a compact roadster sports car and is produced by the German automobile manufacturing company Mercedes-Benz. This vehicle has been in production under this name since 1996 when it replaced the Mercedes 190SL. This car is a retractable roof convertible and is a very classy car. They are extremely luxurious and feature the now famous Mercedes safety kit. They are very well-equipped cars but are not very well refined. The ride, handling and driving position are poor and they are expensive to buy. There are better roadster cars out there for the money you will pay for this car. Mercedes SLK History
The first generation (1996-2004) is based on the R170 platform and was Mercedes entry into the compact roadster market for the first time in a long time, fitting just below the SL. This car had an immediate success and was the first Mercedes to use the vario retractable hard roof. This car had a facelift in 2000 mainly affecting the exterior and mechanics.
The second generation (2004-11) was known as the R171 and had new styling features to both interior and exterior. The front-end design was taken from formula 1 design and there was anew range of engines available. In 2007 there was a facelift which mainly affected the engines and slight exterior alterations.
The third generation (2011-present) is known as the R172 and is the current version on the market and has some new features such as ‘magic sky control’.
The Mercedes SLK has been available in 1.8, 2.0, 2.3, 3.0, 3.2, 3.5, 5.2 and 5.5L petrol and 2.1L diesel engines, depending on which version. The 2.1L diesel is the most economical of the available engines, offering up to 56mpg which is really good for a car of this type. Which engine do you have and how does it perform economically?
