Audi A6 Overview
The Audi A6 comes under the executive car class and is produced by the German manufacturer Audi AG, part of the Volkswagen group. This was first produced to replace the Audi 100 and is one of the larger Audi cars on the market, but not the largest. It comes in both front wheel drive and 4x4. This is a well engineered vehicle, with a very spacious interior and luxurious car to drive and own. Like any Audi, they will serve the test of time and will hold their value over the years.
Audi A6 History
The C4 model (1994-97) was a carry over from the Audi 100 and was available in saloon and avant (estate). As Audi changed to their new alphanumeric system for naming their vehicles, there was not a drastic change in design from the 100 to the A6. The UK was the first to receive the new version due to their vehicles being right hand drive and not so many on the market.
The C5 model (1997-2004) had a major makeover from the previous version. There were new engines introduced, the design was based on a new platform and this took it up in quality, to compete with the likes of the BMW 5 series. The new body was very modern and aerodynamic, giving it a new look and feel. This generation received a bit of a makeover in 2002, mainly to some of the exterior parts such as the lights.
The C6 model (2004-11) was more like a progression on the previous model with not to many changes being made. The main improvement was the addition of a multi media interface and more sophisticated technology on the vehicle. In 2008 it had a bit of a makeover with the lighting and other exterior parts being the main changes.
The C7 model (2011 - ) is the current version in production. It has a lot of similarities to both the A7 and A8 models.
A6 allroad Quattro
Across the different generations of Audi A6’s produced there have been a vast number of different engines used, with different sizes and types. There has been a range of petrol engines from 1.6-4.2L and 1.9-3.0L diesel. The large sized engines aren’t good on fuel economy but this car wasn’t designed for that. The lower sized engines, 1.6 petrol and 1.9 diesel are a lot better economically and will give much better mpg.
Across the range of different generations have been different gearboxes. Currently there are 6-speed manual, 8-speed automatic and 7-speed S-tronic gearboxes. In previous generations there was also a 5-speed manual, automatic and tiptronic available. Breakeryard have a section on Audi gearboxes, where you can find the different A6 gearbox parts.
