Ford Puma Overview

The Ford Puma was introduced as a small sports coupe by the American manufacturer: Ford Motor Company. The European branch of this company produced this car for the European market only. It is a 3 door hatchback coupe and was based on the design of the Ford Fiesta. It was part of Ford’s ‘new edge’ design philosophy. It is seen as a fun to drive car but also just as a supped up Fiesta.

Ford Puma History

The Ford Puma (1997-2001) had a rather short life span, coming into production in 1997 and being discontinued in 2001. It is a front wheel drive which was available in three engine sizes: 1.4, 1.6 and 1.7. The engine was designed in conjunction with Yamaha and most of the vehicles design was based on the Mk4 Fiesta.

The ‘new edge’ design philosophy was first used on the Ford Ka and then on this vehicle. The Ford Puma was reviewed and praised for its well designed cat like look. The Ford Racing Puma was brought out as a sportier version with only 1000 made. There were 500 made for the German market and 500 for the UK market. The high cost of this model was to be its down fall. All Puma model production ceased in 2001.

Fuel Economy

The different engine sizes available were 1.4, 1.6 and 1.7L and as it was designed as a small sports coupe. The 1.4 engine, obviously being the more economical of the bunch. They were all 16 valve engines which took a bit more fuel, but for the class of vehicle it was not too bad on the fuel.
