Vauxhall Astra Overview
The Vauxhall Astra is the UK name for the otherwise known Opel Kadett, which is the name used for this vehicle across the European continent. Vauxhall is the British department of the German automobile manufacturer Opel. The Astra is a small family car that has now been around since 1979 and is one of the most well known vehicles on the British roads. In recent years the Vauxhall Astra has undergone some major improvements to both the interior and exterior of the vehicle.
Vauxhall Astra History
The Mk1 (1980-84) was first built to replace the Vauxhall Viva and was the first vehicle produced by Vauxhall to have front wheel drive. In the first couple years the Astra and Opel Kadett were sold together in the UK until Opel and Vauxhall merged in the early 80’s where the Kadett was taken out of circulation and Opel’s were no longer sold in the UK. The Astra and Opel Kadett were exact same cars. The Vauxhall Astra became a very popular small family car and gave Vauxhall a much needed boost.
The Mk2 (1984-90) used the same mechanical parts as the Mk1 but had a brand new makeover to the body, making it more aero-dynamic and giving it a much better look. It was to become the European car of the year in 1985. This makeover was to help in the sales of the Astra, again being a very popular vehicle in the UK. The GTE was introduced in this range.
The Mk3 (1991- 98) was more of an improvement on the previous model and was the generation where Opel changed from Kadett to Opel Astra. The Astra was brought into the Australian market under the Holden Astra. A lot of safety features were added into this vehicle, including: airbags and side impact bars. This was the first small family car to introduce such features and start a more safety precocious trend.
The Mk4 (1998-2003) improved on more of the safety features as well as improving the handling and steering issues associated with its predecessor.
The Mk5 (2004-09) had many different variations and models available such as: SXi and SRi.
The Mk6 (2009 - present) is the current version available on the market. The design of this version has brought this vehicle to the top of small family car sales in the UK, albeit only for a very small period of time. It was the first time in 37 years that Ford had been knocked off the top of this category.
Active limited edition
The different engines sizes available for the Vauxhall Astra, range from 1.3 – 2.0L, and come in both petrol and diesel. As this vehicle comes in the small family car class then fuel economy is essential. The smaller engine 1.3 diesel is the best economically, but in general the Astra range is pretty good economically.
