Nissan Murano Common Problems and Solutions
Bang When Driving
Problem:
If you drive over a sharp object, you can hear a loud bang. However, your tyres look unaffected.
Solution:
Some of the Muranos built between 2002 and 2005 were not fitted with a shield in front of the fuel tank. When drivers go over sharp objects, they are often being propelled to the back of the vehicle and can cause serious damage to the fuel tank. You'll find protective shields on our parts page, and installation is very simple.

Thumping Sound
Problem:
You can hear a regular thumping sound when the engine is running, and you can feel the vibration of the thud on the floor of the Murano.
Solution:
It's likely that your engine mounts are either failing or completely shot. That means your engine is moving, creating that thumping sound. Check our parts list for new engine mounts and have replacements delivered. Installing engine mounts can be a time-consuming job, but doing this yourself will save you a lot of cash.

Creaking and Clicking
Problem:
You can hear a creaking or a clicking sound when you press on the accelerator.
Solution:
This is likely to be a dirt or corrosion build-up between the splines of the front hubs and CV axle shafts. If you're lucky, you might be able to get away with removing the splines and giving them a good clean. Coat them in grease before re-inserting them. Of course, if the corrosion is too extensive, then you can find front hubs and CV axle shaft replacements using our drop-down menu.

Ticking Noise From Engine
Problem:
You can hear a ticking noise when your engine is running.
Solution:
This will be the result of a faulty fuel dampener. Whether it's been damaged or has simply reached its end of life, you can have a new fuel dampener delivered straight to you when you order from our parts list.

Creaking Sunroof
Problem:
You have a panoramic sunroof, and it's making a creaking noise.
Solution:
Don't ignore a problem with your panoramic roof, especially if it's making noises. One of the biggest flaws of the Murano is that the sunroof glass is simply too thin and is prone to rattle and then explode. If you can hear a creak or a rattle, then you need to reinforce your sunroof with some high-quality sealant, which you can order directly from our online store.

Non-Tightening Seat Belt
Problem:
One or more of your seat belts doesn't lock when it's pulled forward quickly. This will greatly increase the chances of a serious injury in the event of a collision.
Solution:
This doesn't affect a huge number of Muranos, but it's worth knowing how easy it is to resolve. You can order a new seat belt tensioner from BreakerYard for every affected seat. While installing a new seat belt tensioner is a little tricky, it's a lot easier than most people think.
Difficulty level
Rear seat drop lever failure
Problem:
The rear seats can be dropped from levers at either side of the inside of the boot. These levers are known to fail, caused by either the lever failing, or the connecting mechanism inside the panel.
Solution:
You will need to identify exactly which part is causing the failure and replace the faulty part to rectify the situation.
Difficulty level
Drivers seat frame problem
Problem:
It is known for the Murano to have issues with the drivers seat frame failing early, which causes the seat to move from side to side under pressure.
Solution:
You will need to remove the seat and try getting the frame repaired, or fit a replacement frame.
Difficulty level
Rough idling/power loss
Problem:
If you have found that your vehicle is having irregular idling and a loss of intermittent power, then the EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valves are usually the problem. You may also notice a hot oily smell in the vehicle or black smoke coming out the rear of the exhaust. This problem results in too much exhaust gas getting back into the engine.
Solution:
You can remove the EGR valves, give them a clean and re-fit them. This should resolve this issue. Watch the video below to see how this is done:

DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) warning light
Problem:
If you have noticed that the DPF warning light has come on the dashboard then you will have a problem with the DPF (diesel particulate filter) clogging up. If you use the vehicle mainly around town, the DPF does not get hot enough to burn off any unwanted particles, hence clogging up the filter. You may also have noticed reduced performance as the vehicle goes into 'fail safe' mode.
Solution:
You can remove the DPF and clean it out to remove any built up gunk. This should clear the DPF and fix the problem.
