About Wheel Bearing

A Astra Vauxhall wheel bearing is an essential component of the car’s hub assembly and is responsible for the smooth rotation of the wheel on its axle.

Most modern cars use sealed bearings consisting of an inner, central and outer race housing 2 sets of bearings (inner and outer). They are lubricated with high temperature grease and sealed to prevent the ingress of moisture and debris.

The sealed bearing unit is pressed into the centre of the hub assembly.

There are generally 2 types of wheel bearing, roller for driven wheels and race or tapered for non-driven wheels.

Due to the high levels of friction and movement the wheel bearing is prone to wear. This is especially likely when water or debris enters the unit. While sealed bearings are maintenance free older style bearings should be regularly greased to prolong life.

Worn bearings should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent additional wear to other components of the vehicle including tyres, hub assembly and suspension.

Vauxhall Astra trivia

  • The Astra sold exceptionally well in the UK, and it quickly became the second most popular small family car in the country (after the Ford Escort). The Mark 2 Astra sold even more and came very close to the Escort in terms of sales.
  • The Astra GTE Quicksilver was a design exercise intended to coincide with the silver anniversary of the Ellesmere Port Factory in 1987.
  • In 30 years of production, there had been 2.5 million Astras sold in the UK, which means that it ranks fourth in the most popular cars in Britain.
  • Vauxhalls have a hidden shark somewhere in the car, and the Astra is no exception. If you have an Opel Astra, then it might just be worth checking inside the glove box for the classic easter egg!
  • The Astra was originally built in Germany, but after the consolidation of Opel and Vauxhall dealerships in 1981, production of the Astra moved to Ellesmere Port in the UK.
