About Screen Washer Motor

The screenwasher motor is an electrical mechanism that activates a pump which will cause screenwash to be fed to the screenwash jets situated just below the windscreen. In most cases the screenwash motor and pump are enclosed in one unit that is situated with the screenwash reservoir in the engine compartment. Occasionally the motor and pump are two separate units. The screenwash motor is activated by a stick-lever usually found on the steering column.

If the motor fails to operate this could be due to a blown fuse, a poor earth return or corrosion to the terminals, or the motor itself is faulty. If the motor needs replacing it is advisable to also fit a new non-return valve and filter in the reservoir. If the motor is operating properly but no screenwash appears from the screenwash jets it’s possible that there is a blockage or debris in the filter of the pump or in the jet nozzles. To check whether the pump is operating it’s normal to hear a whirring noise from the reservoir area when the stick-lever is pushed. This should mean both motor and pump are working correctly.

If replacing a broken motor with one that is not an exact replica it may be possible to bypass the old motor and fit the replacement with a new mounting.

Chrysler trivia

  • In 2008, Chrysler ran a campaign called ‘Let’s Refuel America’. US motorists who purchased a Chrysler would be given a petrol card that let them have ridiculously cheap petrol, with the guarantee that no Chrysler owner would have to pay more than a few quid over three years of filling up.
  • The oil crisis of the 1970s saw Chrysler looking for new vehicle ideas. They are the car company responsible for the first line of minivans ever, the Dodge Caravan and the Plymouth Voyager. Now, most car manufacturers have a minivan in their lineup.
  • Chrysler cars rank on the very low side when it comes to running costs. Consumer Reports put three years of maintenance and repairs on a Chrysler at just $90 (£68.52). Over ten years, that number goes up to a still very impressive $515 (£392.11).
  • Chrysler has had a few slogans over the years. From the quite surreal ‘Engineered to the Power of Cars’ to the ‘Drive = Love’, they haven’t always made sense. The ‘Imported from Detroit’ slogan was dropped in 2014 so that the company could appeal to a broader audience, and they currently have ‘America’s Import’ as their slogan.
  • The world’s first Chrysler cost just £1,565 in 1924, which is about $23,246.49 in today’s money and £17,692.9 in proper money. The Chrysler Six did come with some cool innovations, including shock absorbers and replaceable oil and air filters.
